Fresh Prince Am Legend

The new, extended trailer for Will Smith’s I Am Legend has been leaked.

Perhaps the first movie ever in which The Fresh Prince does not yell “Aw, HELL, naw” about something bad happening. The end of all humanity is a little bit too catastrophic for the Aw HELL Naws. You ask me, the new trailer reveals a little too much, with the whole ‘immunity’ line, but it’s amusing that we get to see Dr. Fresh Prince, Super Scientist. Maybe he’ll accidentally expose himself to radiation and become The Fresh Hulk.

Yes, I like calling him the Fresh Prince. It doth amuse me.

The trailer does give us a great sense of dire mood, though, and it’ll be good to watch Smith shrug off all his usual crutches and carry a movie on the strength of his presence. The Last Man on Earth. I’m a sucker for apocalyptic futures, no matter how overdone they’ve been. This is director Francis Lawrence’s biggest project to date, moving up from the comic-book travesty Constantine, and there’s no telling how much he’ll change in this adaptation, if he cast Keanu Reeves as a character who was supposed to be a spiky blonde Englishman. The fact that Smith’s first choice of director, Guillermo Del Toro, turned the project down isn’t necessarily a good sign either. However, it’s all a step up from the first attempt to turn this book into a movie, where Ridley Scott was going to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger back in 1994. Sure, Scott is a great director, but even he could only do so much with Ahhnuld, and there couldn’t possibly be nearly the same sense of realism to it that this new trailer seems to show us.

Here’s to optimism.
