On Monday night David Letterman shared some memories he had of his long friendship with legendary actor and fellow racing enthusiast Paul Newman, who died, at the age of 83, the previous Friday night.

“Here is a guy who took care of people… this guy ought to be a saint” said Dave as he revealed that Newman raised nearly a quarter billion dollars through his numerous charitable foundations and activities. He then remembers a converted Volvo that reached 175 mph which Newman had turned him onto. That explains the speeding tickets.

The touching tribute ends with a video montage set to the haunting “Hallelujah” by Rufus Wainwright.

Watch and remember this great humanitarian.
