So it seems Scarlett Johansson is not having a good go of things lately. She’s had a string of not-so-big movies, her attempt at transitioning into the music field with her album Anywhere I Lay My Head has received not-so-good reviews, and now she’s getting a reputation as a diva after rumors of having selfish demands of a house in the country and her own makeup person surfaced as the reason she didn’t go to Cannes to support Vicky Cristina Barcelona, her sexy new Woody Allen film with Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

Those rumors have been contested in the Envelope, as she’s never really seemed to be much of a diva before, and her breakthrough role in Ghost World tends to give her a lot of street cred as not being that kind of self-absorbed movie star (as much as her makeup ads might counter that rep). Her recent engagement to Ryan Reynolds may have actually played a role in all this. There’s even the implication in this article that everything that had been agreed upon for the Cannes trip was reneged upon by the studio, possibly at the behest of Woody himself, annoyed at “his muse’s sudden engagement.” Given Woody’s questionable reputation when it comes to women, this is certainly plausible. We won’t mention how weird it seems that Reynolds got engaged to Johansson barely over a year after ending his four-year engagement to Alanis Morissette. That’s just gossipy.

So we may never know the real truth of what happened in this Cannes flap, unless Woody starts to get loose lips, and given how secretive he is about his steady flow of projects, that’s not all that likely. We’ll just have to keep tabs on the buxom beauty to see if she has any more ego flare-ups.

And where’s Thora Birch, for pete’s sake? She should be just as big a star at Scarlett.
