Fancast Exclusive: Robb Demarest Goes Inside Frankenstein Castle
By Robb Demarest
Special to Fancast

[Ghost Hunters International airs tonight at 9 pm on the Sci Fi Channel]
Josh Gates of Destination Truth. This guy is a one-man party. He has a similar sense of humor to my own. He is a master of the dry sarcasm. I must admit that I was a little shocked when I met him. I am a huge fan of Destination Truth, and I think I drove Josh a tad nutty with my never ending questions. Oh, but Josh got his revenge! I knew that investigating Frankenstein’s Castle was going to be a beast. The majority of the castle is in ruins and I was concerned with how we were going to organize our investigation to avoid contamination. I start looking for Andy Andrews.
Someone tells me he is shooting dice with Josh. OK. No problem. I start hunting for Brian because we were getting ready to start using some new equipment for this case. Where’s Brian? Shooting dice with Josh Gates. Frankenstein’s castle has a huge amount of history. So I am going to need to sit down with Donna. Yup, you guessed it. She’s throwing dice too. It turns out that Josh learned a highly addictive dice game on one of his trips around the globe, and had shared this game with the GHI team. Thanks Josh. I still owe you for that one, but Andy Andrews had my back and we would have the last laugh come investigation time.
We arrived at the castle and started the tour. We had heard some crazy stories of activity and were excited to hear the legends. Our tour guide shared the story of the naked ghost, but we had to try to keep a straight face because every time our client would start to tell the story, shotguns would go off from local hunters, and we would have to start over.

To make things worse, Josh keeps egging me on to ask about the story of a ghost dragon. I decide it has to be done. I pose the question and our client stops dead in his tracks and gives me a look like I just spit at his mother. “GHOST DRAGON! Are you crazy??” he bellowed. In my mind, I’m thinking that this gentleman just finished telling me that he comes once a year to this tower to see a naked ghost, but I’m crazy for asking about a dragon? Thanks Josh Gates! Thanks a lot!
As I said, Andy had my back. There was a tower that was called the Devil’s Tower. Andy found a piece of piping and shimmied up into the tower. Everything was going fine until he attempted his descent. The episode did show Andy dropping his handicam and almost braining Josh, but what you didn’t see is that this was Andy’s second attack on Josh. When Andy stepped over the railing he kicked a light fixture by mistake. There was a very heavy light filter that came crashing down like a throwing star inches away from Josh’s head. Where’s your dice game now Josh? Investigating with Josh was terrific and I would love to join Josh for one of his adventures on Destination Truth.
I saw some strange things during that investigation as well. The episode shows when Andy and I saw a shadow pass across the window in the church. We called it a shadow, but it was more like a dark mass. I will generally avoid mentioning something like that, but this was pretty strange. It wasn’t the only thing I saw. Barry and I were in Dr. Frankenstein’s lab (where we captured an evp), and I saw a light moving up the hill towards the castle. I blinked and it was gone.
A few moments later it would re-appear, move a couple yards, and disappear again. It was about the size of a soccer ball. If it was a firefly, it was the biggest one I have ever seen! I tried getting a picture of it, but my efforts proved futile. I was still pleased with the evidence we were able to catch.
I am also amped up for tonight’s episode of GHI. We investigate a “haunted” theater in New Zealand, and then we traveled 26 hours or so back to Jolly Ole England for a manor. The manor was incredible. It was the kind of location that keeps you motivated to keep investigating until the sun shines in the windows. We also had the opportunity to investigate by ourselves. This is something we generally avoid for a couple reasons. By investigating in pairs we are more safe and we can verify each other’s experiences, but circumstances made this a good chance for some solo investigating.
Those circumstances were pretty sad for me. On tonight’s episode we say goodbye to one of our investigators. Yes, we lose an investigator, but I also said goodbye to a close friend. It’s not like this person passed away, but they did head for home. Life on the road can be tough. I get a lot of messages from people that talk about how much they would love to be in my position. I can understand. This show has been an amazing opportunity, but it can be draining as well. We work crazy hours and travel constantly. We live out of our suitcases and spend more time arguing with hotel cleaning staff than we do with our families. By the end of this season, there will be only two investigators that have been on every investigation.
Well, hate to end on a sour note! I can’t wait to see tonight’s episode. I also want to make sure that I take some time to answer questions all of you have. So, tomorrow I will be answering questions and talking about the mayhem that is sure to erupt after tonight’s cases! Take care and I’ll see you on the television tonight!
