Blue Denim

Watch the 1959 film Blue Denim for free in its entirety right here, right now on Fancast.

The “teens in trouble” genre was a popular fad back in the 1950s, when things were still called “fads.” In 1959’s Blue Denim, however, the subject of an unplanned pregnancy is dealt with in very serious terms and surprisingly compelling performances. When Arthur (Brandon De Wilde) and Janet (Carol Lynley) find themselves saddled with this quiet terror for any teenager, and unable to confide in their emotionally distant parents, their investigations into the possibility of getting an illegal abortion lead them to a startling underground network. In the original stage production, Janet goes ahead with the procedure. Can the same be said for the cinematic version? You’ll have to see for yourself, and along the way, you can check out an early performance from Macdonald Carey, legendary for his long-running career as Dr. Thomas Horton on Days of Our Lives.

Watch the trailer for the Academy-Award nominated Vera Drake, which deals with another side of this issue.
Watch the trailer for The Magdalene Sisters, which tells of the dangers of Catholic condemnation of “sinful young women” in 1964.
