Video: Charlize Theron, Woody Harrelson and More in “Battle in Seattle”
The World Trade Organization convened in Seattle on November 30, 1999. So did more than 40,000 protesters opposing WTO policies, in a very loose coalition of different motivations - from the ALF-CIO’s labor issues to environmental, consumer and religious activists and even anarchists. The result was five days of confusion, rioting and mayhem in the Pacific Northwest.
Stuart Townsend has made a film based on these events, called Battle in Seattle. Intertwining stories of several people caught up in it all, from riot cop Woody Harrelson and his pregnant wife Charlize Theron to conflicting protestors Martin Henderson and Channing Tatum to Ray Liotta as the beleaguered mayor. It was a surreal experience that made Seattle feel like a war zone, yet proved that Americans are not always apathetic about their democracy.
