Free Movie on Fancast: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in “The Scorpion King”
There was a time when the beloved Dwayne Johnson was a big, loud and amusingly obnoxious professional wrestler who called himself The Rock. The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment. The People’s Champion. The biggest star in the WWE. There was a time when it was considered an incredibly novel thing to give this big burly man a small supporting role in The Mummy Returns as the big bad guy, which may explain why they didn’t risk giving him a part that involved anything more than looking big and scary, and when he showed up at the end, it was just his head awkwardly CGed onto a big goofy scorpion monster thing. The Rock’s popularity, however, got people thinking that maybe he could carry a movie on his own. There had certainly been worse ideas out there.
So The Rock became The Scorpion King, but rather than pitching him as the scary beast from The Mummy Returns, he’s instead cast as a badass assassin warrior who gets betrayed and sets out on an avenging mission, hooking up with an equally badass Michael Clarke Duncan and the staggeringly hot sorceress Kelly Hu along the way. By the end, he’s found a semblance of morality and we believe he will become a benevolent king. It’s a fun action flick that celebrates combat, like a goofier, more whimsical Conan film. That’s what you should expect, since it was directed by Chuck Russell, who also gave us The Mask.
It’s definitely worth watching The Scorpion King not only because it’s a fun ride, but to see just how far The Rock has come in his thespian career. And seriously, if you need to be convinced about the Kelly Hu aspect, watch this clip.
