Brad Garrett is a busy guy. Not only does the new season of “‘Til Death” premiere tonight on FOX, but he’s also been filling up his off nights with a new venture, an online only TV show called “Dating Brad Garrett.” Luckily he wasn’t too busy to spend a few moments to fill us in on the plot.
Q: How did this all come about?
BG: Well the web site’s been up there for a couple of months now and It’s important for people to understand that this isn’t Brad Garrett looking for love. This is Brad Garrett really making a window around what’s it like for a guy going through a semi-midlife crisis out there in the playing field of the single world. These are real participants and it’s been a very humbling experience. Out of all the women in the country who could possibly think they might want to go out with me, only 27 of them actually uploaded a video, and one was a guy, and one was a bear. And the bear was intimidated by my height, if you can believe that. It kind of gives you an idea of what hurdles I have in real life dating. It’s the Anti-Bachelor, is what it is.
Q: How did you find making the leap from scripted to unscripted television?
BG: Well, you know, I’ve been doing stand-up for literally 30 years now and the majority of my act is unscripted. I come from the world of improv and I love any show that gives me the opportunity to be in the moment. The majority of reality shows, even though they call them non-scripted, they’re not reality. To me the unscripted part of it was what makes it exciting and experimental and gave it a feeling of reality.
Q: What are you looking for in a woman?
BG: Someone who won’t run to the authorities. Someone who understands I’m just a big kid. You know, I’m a strong cup of coffee, at least that’s what the shrink keeps telling me. But this is more of a comedy take on me being single than it was me looking for the love of my life. I mean, I’m not that naive… these are glorified dates. What I did was, I took the glory out of it.
