Versatile actor, musician and good ol’ boy Jerry Reed has died at his Nashville home. He was 71.

Reed, who started his career as a guitarist appearing with the likes of Chet Atkins and Roy Clark, found his greatest success as a “good ‘ole boy” in the “Smokey and the Bandit” movies with buddy Burt Reynolds and made an appearance on the silver screen just last year in the redneck comedy “Delta Farce.”

Although Jerry Reed never claimed to be anything more than a simple backwoods guitar player, he sold millions of records, wrote some early Elvis Presley songs, was a regular on “Hee Haw” and composed the theme for many of the movies he appeared in as an actor just playing himself.
