Watch a Movie on Fancast: Daniel Day-Lewis in “In The Name of the Father”

These days, the relatively hermit-like personal life of Daniel Day-Lewis, combined with his Oscar-winning sociopathic curmudgeon character of Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood, have made him seem like some sort of growly mysterious enigma. Back in 1993, however, he was a smoldering heartthrob for the intellectuals who would seek out his films. Either way, he’s never lost the burning intensity he brings to roles, and Jim Sheridan’s In the Name of the Father, nominated for seven Academy Awards, is no different.
Day-Lewis plays Gerry Conlon, an Irishman who becomes subject of an ugly chapter in England’s legal history. In 1974, there was a bombing in Guildford, England that killed five people, masterminded by the Irish Republican Army. Conlon was wrongly accused of participating in this ac and, after a brutal interrogation, he was forced to sign a false confession that sends him to prison. But that isn’t enough. His entire family is destroyed by this, and his father (Pete Postlethwaite) is even accused of being an accomplice and imprisoned as well. Conlon is tormented by this abuse, but there is hope, as British attorney Gareth Pierce (Emma Thompson) worked tirelessly to try and free Conlon and expose the truth.
