Best Of 2008: Top 20 Online TV Shows On Fancast (16-20)
16. Jericho: An online fan campaign briefly resuscitated this post-apocalyptic series about survivors of nuclear holocaust. Then it was crushed once again. However, in its lifetime the show’s producers innovated with the webisode, thus creating a show that was a true multi-platform experience. The smart, passionate people involved in the Save Jericho Campaign (savejerichoagain.com) understood, and we know they watched, and continue to watch on Fancast. Guys, this is for you!
17. The Young And The Restless: It’s been the #1 soap opera every week since Reagan was in the White House
for a reason. The show has it all: great stories featuring the characters
you’ve loved since you were a kid, attention to history, high production
values, romance and intrigue. This year was a renaissance for the show as
new headwriters Maria Arena Bell and Hogan Sheffer gave the show’s grande
dame Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor) the best storyline of her life and
Ashley Abbott returned to Genoa City. Best of all, it’s available online,
which means no more scheduling lunch-breaks around the show. You can watch
during work.
18. How I Met Your Mother: The clever use of a “Back To The Future” narrative device has endeared this epic love story to fans who vow to remain loyal until the year 2030, when the title characters begin to tell the tale of their long ago romance to the kids. But by then the web should evolve into a real time machine, giving us all the chance to find out for ourselves.
19. MacGyver: If this show had gone beyond its seven-year run, which ended in 1992, Angus MacGyver probably would have invented the World Wide Web with some tin foil and a few old radio tubes. This is arguably the best show to watch from a cubicle when you have paperclips, push pins, tape, and other tools in front of you.
20. Prison Break: The original idea for this series (brilliant engineer devises an ingenious plan to spring his wrongfully accused brother from prison) is allegedly based on a true story. But millions of viewers couldn’t have cared less until the series was pre-empted by the 2007 MLB playoffs on FOX. When episodes were streamed for free on MySpace to keep interest alive, the website got a shot in the arm that resulted in an explosion of new memberships, and the show held on to its fan base. Now that’s an escape plan.
