For the overwhelming majority of us, cops are taken pretty much for granted. Until we catch a glimpse of one in the rear view mirror. For some reason, even the most law abiding citizen experiences a momentary shiver up the spine.

Luckily, TV has no such phobia. Since the early days a prime-time focus of television has been on courtroom, hospital and especially, police dramas. We can’t get enough of them.

So to honor that (hopefully) unseen presence in all our lives, Fancast presents TV’s Greatest Cops.

1. COPS: Wild Chases Special Edition

When officers in Spokane, WA, spot a stolen truck, the suspects take off down country roads and outpace police in an off-road chase through a heavily wooded area.

2. Campus Cops: Muskrat Ramble
Andy and Wayne are entrusted with the simple task of guarding Canfield University’s mascot “Lucky” until the big game against rival school Farnan University.

3. Dragnet: The Grenade
When Friday and Gannon trace a teen-age suspect to his home, he runs away carrying a live grenade.

4. Hill Street Blues: Hearts And Minds
Captain Furillo parlays with Jesse John Hudson, a powerful ex-gang leader whose dubious rhetoric of community involvement and self-help seems to mask more sinister intentions.

5. Adam-12: Immunity
A visiting East German security officer (guest star James Nixon) attempts to defect. Ethan Wayne and Peter Parros star.
