The election of Barack Obama as the next President of the United States has had a thrilling effect on the surge in applications for U.S. citizenship. And it just increased by two.

According to People Magazine, overnight sensation Simon Baker, star of the hit CBS series The Mentalist (and an Australian native) has decided to take the oath himself. And his wife is on board as well.

While having a cup of coffee with Parade’s James Brady recently, Baker said “The morning after your election in November, I said to my wife Rebecca, ‘You know, I’m thinking about becoming an American,’ and then she said that she felt the same way.”

Baker has already taken one giant step towards blending in by affecting an American accent, one of the hardest acting tricks in the books. And for a small clique of foreign born TV stars who’ve perfected the technique, many viewers are shocked to learn the truth about their heritage when they catch them on the talk show circuit or in interviews on syndicated entertainment news shows.

Other notable examples include UK actors Hugh Laurie of House fame and Damian Lewis on Life. Then there’s the latest member of the club (and fellow Aussie) Toni Collette from the new series The United States Of Tara.

See. With 3 weeks still to go until inauguration day, President Obama has already had a positive effect on the future of the nation. Now if he could just help me with this Brooklyn accent.
