The Barney and Robin romance on ‘How I Met Your Mother‘ is officially kaput, and Barney’s already back in the game (come on, would you expect anything less from the inventor of ‘The Bro Code‘?).

But could there be a second chance for the awkward lovebirds?

“[The relationship] went seven episodes, which I think was more than they anticipated it going,” Neil Patrick Harris (Barney) told us during a recent set visit. “And I feel like there’s still un-mined territory. You know what I mean by that, don’t ya?? “Un-mined” territory??”

Harris also tipped us off that the Barney-Robin hook up was actually his idea. For real?

“I was a huge angler toward that relationship happening in the first place. I just thought that Cobie [Smulders] was sexy and therefore thought that Barney would think that Robin was sexy,” he said.

“So I gave lots of long staring at her boobs and longingly looking at her butt and stuff. It wasn’t written in the script I just thought that was appropriate. And so it turned into kind of a relationship.”

Cobie Smulders seems to agree that the two might once again gravitate towards one another – but maybe when they hit the big 4-0.

While she told us that it probably “wasn’t meant to be,” she thinks there still might be a future ahead of them.

“They like to leave men dangling in front of me,” she explained. “With Ted, I feel like that book was not really closed. They keep teasing that a little bit.”

But with Barney? “It’s definitely been interesting being in scenes where I’m like ‘I shouldn’t be in this scene!’ Because he’s like literally talking about having sex with this girl and I’m sitting right here. That’s weird. Maybe if they get older and they start looking for different things and settle down a bit. I think it could happen.”

What is Robin’s Idea of the perfect man? “Someone who is confident, funny, professional, has a professional drive, wants to be successful, who can challenge her, keep up with her, and is really attractive.”

Doesn’t that sound a wee bit like Barney? “Ha ha pretty much,” she said.
