If you receive a check in the mail from American Idol, it’s not a reward for being a faithful viewer—it’s a scam. Producers have been informed of a mail fraud scheme that consists of fake checks and American Idol letterheads being sent to unsuspecting recipients, telling them they’ve been selected to win money.

While getting free money in the mail seems like a pretty sweet deal, producers warn that they had nothing to do with it. It’s probably fair to presume that state lotteries and Publisher’s Clearing House aren’t involved, either.

If you do get an American Idol-themed “prize,” report it to the proper authorities AND make sure to catch preview of the upcoming American Idol season on Fancast.
