America Ferrera got an award over the weekend at the 2008 Alma Awards held in Pasadena, California, but not just for her work on Ugly Betty. She was praised for her off-screen work for her efforts to get young people to vote and get involved in politics. The award show was hosted by Eva Longoria and also included performances by The Black Eyed Peas, the Cheetah Girls, Sergio Mendes and–get this–Cheech and Chong, marking their return into the pop culture landscape. Alma awards also went to TV stars like Charlie Sheen, Edward James Olmos, Roselyn Sanchez and Judy Reyes for their contributions to television. Award for most surprising (and random!) guest of the night goes to Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale, who presented awards and dined together immediately after the show. Weird!
The telecast is scheduled to air on September 12th on ABC.
