Last night on a TLC special entitled ‘Kate: Her Story,’ Kate Gosselin spoke to NBC reporter Natalie Morales about the recent drama in her life, Jon’s relationship with Hailey Glassman, and how her family has come too far to step away from the spotlight. Appearing teary eyed, Kate occasionally choked up and told Morales during the interview, “I signed up for a reality show, not to be a tabloid staple.”

Family Woes

The show touched upon a variety of topics in Kate’s life, including the difficult relationship that she has with her parents, whom she emails regularly but rarely calls. Growing up she felt like “the forgotten middle child” and that their relationship changed when she became pregnant with sextuplets.

“There’s definitely something missing when you don’t have supportive parents on your side,” Kate said.

She also spoke on her feelings of betrayal after brother Kevin Kreider publicly criticized her on television this past June. “There’s very few people I can trust,” Kate said about her support system of family and friends. “I look at those people and ask why do you keep coming back?”

As a result, Kate says she’s battling with feelings of isolation, “I’m awake in the middle of the night thinking, ‘am I making the best decision?’ It’s very lonely.” She said tearfully, “I’ve gone through very tough times but never alone…I don’t have a person in my same boat.”

Jon Gosselin’s Anger Issues

Morales asked Kate about recent comments made by Jon’s girlfriend Hailey Glassman, who Kate claims to have only met for “a two-minute meeting” prior to Glassman’s relationship with Jon.

On Glassman’s recent accusations of Jon’s bad temper Kate said, “I know that he has a lot of anger.” Kate also took the opportunity to acknowledge that she mistreated him while they were still together on the show, “I was very hard on him and I will never deny that.” She added, “I was wrong to treat him that way.”

“He would say he felt like he didn’t have a purpose,” Kate said about Jon’s growing unhappiness at the end of their relationship. The decision to get a divorce was, “a very mutually agreed upon thing.” She says, “I still think the phone will ring and it will be ‘the old Jon.’”

How the Kids are Doing

As for her children, Kate says that she just wants peace for them. “Peace would be stepping out of the spotlight,” Morales said. To which Kate replied, “We’re too far gone.”

She revealed that she doesn’t let the children say the word paparazzi, because she believes it’s not something children their age should know. According to Kate, the two parents broke the news of their split to their children lightly, “We didn’t use the word divorce. We did a very watered down version.”

While their relationship is strained from constant attacks in the press and hostile accusations of deception from both sides, Kate said that her and Jon are trying their best to be good parents to the children that catapulted them to fame. “It doesn’t matter if we’re married or not, we’re still going to be their parents.” The two text each other often filling in the other parent on the events of the day and try to split time between them evenly.

“Stepping out of the spotlight when it’s prudent to do so is a good thing,” Kate said about ending the show and giving her kids a life away from the cameras. “My kids deserved life served to them on a gold platter and I’ll do what it takes.”
