Hello Everyone!

Last night’s Episode #8 of The Amazing Race took teams to the heretofore-never-visited Kazakhstan for a menagerie involving CHICKENS, COWS, SHEEP, EAGLES and more! Let’s get started with today’s BLOG!

Sheep Rear-Ends

The show began with teams departing from the Pitstop in India en route to Almaty, Kazakhstan. Nick & Starr, being the first team to arrive at the Pitstop in the previous episode, were the first to depart, followed closely by mother/son combo Toni & Dallas.

Both teams hit the computer to do research on flights. As Nick and Toni astutely searched for flight information, Dallas and Starr picked up from where their flirtation ended last episode! It was apparent that these lovelorn travelers were getting more and more comfortable with each other, and that things were beginning to intensify between them. After leaving the internet station, Dallas remarked that he is kind of stuck in a conundrum —- he wants to help Starr but he also wants to win the million for himself and his mother…….

Nick & Starr and Toni & Dallas scored seats on a flight arriving in Almaty at 11:50 PM. Soonafter, the other teams began to arrive and book their flights……..Ken & Tina booked on the flight arriving at 11:50 PM, Terrence & Sarah would arrive at 1:20 AM, and Andrew & Dan would arrive even LATER in Almaty.

Upon arrival in Almaty, Kazakhstan, teams made their way to the Alel Agro Chicken Factory……which incidentally would not open until 7:30 AM. This gave all the teams a chance to catch-up, with even the tardy Andrew & Dan arriving before 7:30 AM.

Finally, 7:30 AM arrived and the five teams RUSHED into the factory to discover this Leg’s Roadblock. In this Roadblock challenge, one team member would need to search the factory —- which was full of over 30,000 live chickens —– for one of only seven golden eggs.

The clue also gave the teams an option for the second and final FAST FORWARD in this season of the Amazing Race! To explain the Fast-Forward: In each edition of the Amazing Race, there are TWO Fast-Forward opportunities, hidden in TWO separate legs. Only ONE team can use the Fast-Forward. The Fast-Forward is generally a difficult task. Once you complete the Fast-Forward, however, you are rewarded handsomely, as you win permission to SKIP the rest of the leg and proceed DIRECTLY to the Pitstop!

The thought of Fast-Forwarding to the finish line proved seductive for both Nick & Starr and Terrence & Sarah —– who both jumped in their cabs and barreled down the road toward the site of the Fast Forward: a traditional Kazakh restaurant.

This was truly a “make-it-or-break-it” moment in this edition of the Amazing Race. As these two teams raced to the Fast Forward, they were both gambling their own survival in the game. This was ALL-OR-NONE……as whoever completed this Fast Forward FIRST would obviously be off to the Pitstop safely……but the other team would be in a time deficit which would be difficult to recover from.

Nick & Starr and Terrence & Sarah arrived at the Fast Forward challenge at almost the same time……to discover that it was a DREADED EATING CHALLENGE. Each member of a team would need to consume what amounted to a large bowl full of fat and meat from the rear end of a sheep. Even on sight, this “meal” looked absolutely revolting.

Nick & Starr dove in tongue-first, lapping up the meal at an amazingly fast pace. Terrence, on the other hand, struggled….as a true vegetarian, he had not eaten ANY meat in over 15 years. Terrence soon realized that he could not make himself eat the entire bowl, so he and Sarah abandoned the task.

Nick & Starr soon finished their meal, earning the right to “Fast Forward” to the Pitstop in Old Square, Kazakhstan.

Back at the Roadblock, Toni & Dallas, Ken & Tina, and Andrew & Dan successfully found golden eggs amongst the crazy number of chickens and were rewarded with a clue directing them to travel by crane truck to the Tienshan Mountains.

HAVE WE SET A RECORD YET???? —– NICK & STARR SCORE FIRST PLACE
***************************************************************************************

As the teams began to leave the Roadblock, Nick & Starr checked into the Pistop at Old Square once again in FIRST PLACE. Phil awarded them with two wave runners.

Nick & Starr once again dominated. And in this Leg, they did so without an ounce of deception or a single “shady” move! This victory marked their 5th FIRST PLACE finish. Whether you love them or hate them, Nick & Starr won this Leg because they were FASTER than anyone else. PERIOD.

Back to the Race at hand, Toni & Dallas were the first team to arrive at Tienshan Mountains, where they followed a steep path to find a group of Mongol Warriors. Once there, an EAGLE —– YES a REAL EAGLE —— flew over and delivered to them their Detour Clue. This was one of those “only on the Amazing Race will you see this moments”……where else will you see an EAGLE fly down and deliver a clue to a contestant?!?! As the other teams arrived at the Mongols, the eagle delivered their clues as well.

Today’s Detour was PLAY LIKE MAD or ACT LIKE FOOLS. In Play Like Mad, teams had to learn to play a Kazakhstan song using two actual musical instruments, then play the songs in the park to solicit tips from strangers. In Act Like Fools, teams would travel to a PUPPET THEATRE and get dressed in a TWO-PERSON COW COSTUME. One person would be in the front and the “head” of the cow, the other would be in the back and be the “ass” of the cow. [No we are not joking here!] Once dressed up as a cow, the team would need to search the streets to find a Milk-stand, drink a full glass of milk, and find the next clue on the bottom of the glass.

As fate would have it, every team chose to dress up as a cow! Not a single team chose the Play Like Mad option……..

Wag your tail and be a good ass!!!

Toni & Dallas were the first team to don the cow costume…. with Dallas in the FRONT of the cow, and Toni in the back of the cow. In one of the episode’s funniest moments, Dallas instructed his mother to “Wag your tail and be a good ass!”

As the other remaining teams began to dress up as cows, Dan gave more colorful instructions to his partner Andrew. Attempting to convince Andrew to the be the caboose of the cow, Dan told him that the “bigger guy needs to go in the back, for weight distribution, there’s probably physics behind it.”

So, let’s not waste Dan’s wisdom here! Remember this for your next physics class……..let’s review Newton’s Laws:

(4) When dressing up as a cow, put the fatter guy in the BACK for proper distribution of weight and forces.

Back at the Detour, Ken & Tina were the first team to make it to the Milk Stand and drink the glass of milk. However, she did not read the bottom of the glass. Confused, Ken & Tina left the Milk Stand thinking erroneously that there must be another one they needed to find. Toni & Dallas soon reached the stand, drunk their milk, and read the clue in the bottom of the glass instructing them to find a meat counter in the Zelyoniy Bazaar. Toni & Dallas made their way to the Meat Counter, and found the final clue of the Leg, instructing them to take their cow costume with them to the Pitstop

Toni & Dallas then checked into the Pistop in SECOND place for the SECOND week in a row! After a great dal of confusion regarding their cow costume, Ken & Tina checked in at THIRD…..leaving Andrew & Dan and Terrence & Sarah left to battle to survive.

Andrew & Dan completed the “cow suit” Detour and mistakingly took a taxi cab to the Pitstop. Phil quickly shooed them away, telling them that the Clue stated to make their way via foot.

At this time, Terrence & Sarah were finishing their Detour….. and began to race to the Pitstop. In a nail-biting ending, the Frats made it to Phil and Terrence & Sarah were the last team to arrive and were promptly eliminated from the Amazing Race.

OTHER TIDBITS TO NOTE
*******************************

-Dallas and Starr appear to be getting more and more daring with their flirtation. How will this effect these teams now that we are down to the FINAL FOUR?!?!

-Toni & Dallas again showed great empathy by helping Ken & Tina, when Ken & Tina misunderstood the Detour and took off their cow costume prematurely. Toni & Dallas told them to get their suit back on! Had they not helped them, Ken & Tina could have been penalized for not following the clue instructions.

-Nick & Starr won this leg with their “fairest and squarest” performance to date.

-Whether they are playing well or making mistakes, the fact is: the FRATS are FUN to watch! However, if you watched this episode closely……Andrew & Dan seemed to have left their SHOES back at the costume department. Will they be racing next week in the flimsy “cloth boots” of the cow costume? If so, their feet are in serious
trouble……

-For the last time…..to the Amazing Racers of Season 13: PLEASE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD READ THE CLUES!!!!!!!! Never in the history of this series, have so many teams MISREAD their Amazing Race clues, leading to a variety of errors, confusion, and penalties!!!!!

Culinary Conviction Spells Doom for Terrence & Sarah
******************************************************

The key moment leading to the elimination of Terrence & Sarah was Terrence’s inability to “eat the meat” at the Fast Forward. This put the team crucially behind the others, and they never caught up.

Terrence remained true to his vegetarian ways, and just could not stomach a bowl full of animal meat and fat.

Despite having a few “bickering moments,” Terrence & Sarah showed nothing but mutual admiration, support, and love for one another. Their “final kiss” at Phil’s mat was the Kodak moment of the season thus far.

Terrence is a man of passion, and sometimes that spirit seemed to overflow a little —- hence the moments of bickering.

One thing is clear —- these two share a bond and an understanding wherein each person has permission to not be “perfect” at all times. No relationship is perfect until two people realize, appreciate, and embrace one another’s strengths……..and weaknesses.

Though stressful, the Amazing Race strengthened an already strong foundation. We wish Terrence & Sarah a life of adventure that we know will span far beyond this Race.
