This episode of Friday Night Lights, titled “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn,” is not exactly the Panthers finest hour. It’s the big game, and quarterbacks are being alternated in and out. JD swaps in after a yellow flag. After a pep talk, JD scores a touchdown. Matt’s in hell. At the end of the game, Eric sticks with JD instead of bringing Matt back. Then he swaps in Matt in the final ten seconds. He scores a touchdown. Panthers win! Eric is crazy like a fox. Matt walks off the field as JD gets all the glory.

Mac and the rest of the coaching staff lobby Eric to make JD the permanent quarterback. Eric breaks the news to Matt that JD’s going to be the starter. Matt reacts with his typical stoicism. Matt’s Mom, Shelby, wants to move in until he graduates. Matt tells her to do whatever she wants. He finally flips in the locker room, throwing his equipment around. He tells Eric he’s done everything that was asked of him. Eric admits that JD is the better player. Matt quits. Eric refuses to let him.

Matt tells him he’ll stay on the team, but they’ll both hate every second of it. Grandma criticizes Shelby for buying the wrong groceries. Matt tells his Mom that he lost the QB1 spot. He has to sit on the sidelines at a tense practice.

Julie gets a tattoo on her ankle. Her parents freak. They talk to Julie about her “thought process,” convinced it’s a symptom of larger problems. Tami wants her to get the tattoo removed. Tami tells Julie that she almost dropped out of high school. Julie assures her Mom she isn’t headed down the wrong path. Tami lets her keep the tattoo.
