Up is down. Cold is hot. Meredith Grey was actually likable this episode.
The Chief makes a speech laying out the hospital’s new rules. Residents are no longer allowed to specialize. Personal relationships will no longer play a role in who gets what assignment. Good luck with that, Chief. The surgeons are supposed to do less hand holding. The attending are responsible for the performance of their interns.
Meredith declares herself through with therapy because she and Derek are happy. Izzy’s surprised that Derek thinks she and Alex are moving out. She indignantly reports the news to Alex, who’s in bed with a random. Everyone confronts her. Meredith’s thought was that they’d all live together in a big, happy family. Derek thinks she’s nuts.
Christina thinks Meredith should do whatever she wants. Derek gets Christina to tell Meredith that the roomies should move out in exchange for performing a procedure.
Afterwards she feels awful and tells Derek she’ll never do it again. She asks the therapists to tell Meredith to keep the roommates because she needs their support to function. The shrink observes that Christina’s afraid she’ll lose her best friend to Derek. Christina reminds us why she wins at life by saying, “You’re a terrible shrink.” Izzy finds an apartment for rent and asks Alex to be her roommate. He’d rather live in his car. She makes her pitch to Christina. Christina misinterprets and decides to rent the apartment with Callie. Everyone’s Izzy hatred is so meta. Izzy tells Meredith she’s all alone. Meredith tells Derek she isn’t going to kick out her friends. In full McDreamy mode, he understands and tells her they’ll revisit the topic when she’s ready.
George is about to retake his internship exam when the roof starts leaking. He postpones the test to help the chief. Alex’s patient falls in the water, thanks to the leaking pipe.
Hahn is surprised that Callie told Sloane about their relationship. She wants him out of the loop. Callie isn’t willing to stop talking to her friends about them.
Meredith preps a cancer patient, Shelly, for surgery. The patient asks Meredith to distract her by gossiping about her love life. Her tumor is worse than expected and they won’t be able to save her. Shelly tries to stay cheerful, but breaks down with Meredith.
Lexie asks Sloane to consult because she thinks a patient with constant excruciating head pain would benefit from an ENT. She’s right, and he’ll need a much simpler surgery. Sloane offers Lexie the opportunity to scrub in. She turns it down to help George study for his exam. Sloane thinks she’s pathetic, but finds her photographic memory impressive.
The leak turns into a big flood, hence the episode title. The chief refuses to consider Bailey’s suggestions for handling it. While Hahn and Alex operate on a patient who believes the universe hates him, the leak spreads and water gushes over the patient as the roof caves in. Korev busts in on Sloane’s surgery, saying they need the room. They have to explore the patient’s abdomen and learn he doomed patient has a pancreatic tumor. But they’ve caught it so early that he’ll be fine. The ceiling collapse saved him. The Chief tells Bailey she was right. They need to transfer patients to other hospitals.
George finally gets to take his test.
