Meredith informs us that tonight’s themes are darkness and sleep.
In the shark jumping department, Izzie has sex with Ghost Denny. Grey’s Anatomy: where sex with a corpse is okay as long as it’s not a lesbian corpse. Alex and Meredith hear Izzie making orgasm noises. Eew. They knock on her door to let her know they’ve been paged. Izzie claims she’s sick and will be staying in. She can hear Denny’s heartbeat, which she knows is impossible. They have an unending conversation about whether or not he’s a figment of her imagination. Izzie finally leaves when she gets a 911 page. He promises he’ll wait for her.
Everyone sucks up to Bailey so they can assist in an appendectomy which they suspect will be the solar surgery they’ll be competing for. Christina and Meredith get picked. She instructs them. It’s complicated, not something an intern could do – but I’m getting ahead of myself.
The Intern Society has progressed to epidurals. Sadie tells Lexie Meredith thinks she’s a priss. Lexie suggests taking out the intern’s appendix. He wisely refuses so Sadie volunteers. They get started on Sadie, using a text book to guide them. Lexie can’t bring herself to make an incision. She realizes they should demand improved training instead of cutting each other open. Sadie makes the incision herself. Lexie notices her appendix is inflamed. Sadie won’t let anyone call a resident. One intern leaves. When Christina sees her binging on chocolate she realizes something is up. She and Meredith find the amateur appendectomy. It’s all gone to hell. They order the interns to call the chief. One gets Bailey. Lexie admits it was her idea. Bailey walks Meredith and Christina through the surgery. All the interns await their fate in hallway. Lexie tells George she did this on her own. It’s the one thing she hasn’t done for him. Another intern asks George how she missed noticing she was in love with him.
The Chief praises Meredith and Christina for their surgery and for telling him right away. Lexie tries to save them by making a big speech blurting out that Christina tried to stop her and getting her in trouble. Meredith says she didn’t know. Christina is pissed that she didn’t stand up for her, pointing out that all of their interns participated, making them all responsible. Bailey tells the residents they have to talk to the interns themselves. Christina makes them present Sadie’s case in front of a recuperating Sadie.
All the interns are on probation and barred from the OR indefinitely. Alex tells them they’ve lost his respect. One thinks he’s hypocritical for respecting Izzie after the Denny debacle. Oh, you have no idea intern. Alex slams him against a wall as Izzie arrives. Sadie admits to Meredith she doesn’t know why she sliced herself open. Methinks someone’s a cutter.
Callie briefs Mark on a patient who fell out a window while sleepwalking in the throes of a night terror. He has another one while they examine him, hitting Callie in the face and breaking her nose. Once he’s conscious he tells them he’s had sleeping problems since his wife died. He forgot to take his medication. Mark realizes his cute tween daughter hasn’t been sleeping out of concern for her Dad. Derek thinks the man may have epilepsy. His daughter tells him he’s been having night terrors all along. He took his medication before he went out the window. She blamed herself for stressing him out. The doctors assure her she had nothing to do with it. Mark tells the girl he had absentee parents and had trouble sleeping when they weren’t home. He gets her to sleep. We learn Derek and Mark were friends as kids. Derek is inspired to bring Lexie home for the evening.
Leslie Grossman (Mary Cherry from Popular) is a hypochondriac patient who has wrecked her immune system with unnecessary antibiotics she ordered online. She needs a fecal transplant, which is what it sounds like. Yes it’s a real procedure. The husband refuses to donate his stool until she admits her staph infection was really a pimple.
Mark tells the hubby to accept her reality. Hmm, I wonder what this is paralleling. Mary Cherry admits to being a hypochondriac. Her husband agrees to donate his poop.
In the ending montage, Miranda confides to Callie that surgery has become routine to her. Maybe she needs a new challenge or she’s tired. Callie empathizes. Owen shows up on the steps of Christina’s building and tells her she’s beautiful. Alex tells Izzie he’s willing to put up with all her problems. She leaves Denny to go with him. We see Denny after she leaves which lends credence to the “he’s an actual ghost theory.”
