A sophomore show has been canceled - two weeks before it was set to return.

The L.A. cop drama ‘Southland,’ starring ‘O.C.’s’  Ben McKenzie, has been canceled by NBC. The season was slated to begin October 23.

The series had kicked off to great reviews but bad ratings.

“I’m disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success,” show producer John Wells said to THR. “We remain extremely proud of ‘Southland’ and are actively looking for another home for the series.”

THR reports that NBC suggested that “Southland” was “too dark and gritty.”
