Although Neil Patrick Harris first skyrocketed to fame as TV’s Doogie Howser, M.D. and is now tearing up the screen on How I Met Your Mother, it’s slowly dawning on the entertainment world that Harris is a song and dance man at heart.

This past weekend on Saturday Night Live he appeared in a skit that lampooned the Great White Way, decked out as Mark from the hit musical “Rent” with head mic, sweater and scarf included. It wasn’t much of a stretch. Harris has already starred in the play, but this was the first time he’s had such a large audience cheering him on.

The skit spoofed the current crisis on Broadway with bloated shows over-stuffed with mediocre talent daring to ask for 150 bucks a pop to get in the door. No iconic musical was spared as the SNL cast touched upon “Cats“, “The Phantom Of The Opera” and resurrecting the sickly sweet tunes from “Annie.” The bad news finally sent the “Fiddler On The Roof” crashing to the pavement in protest.

Still, it’s just a taste of the versatility that Neil Patrick Harris has begun to display as he’s definitely grown up and into his new role. If the goal is to save Broadway, giving him a shot is a good place to start.
