UPDATE: Paula Abdul released a statement Thursday evening:

“American Idol is a fantastic show that offers an invaluable platform to young talent. Ellen DeGeneres is wildly funny and talented in her own right. I wish her and the show only the best of luck.”

Paula Abdul is stunned by the news that she has been replaced by Ellen DeGeneres on ‘American Idol.’

“Privately, Paula is very upset. She’s never going to admit it publicly but this stung,” according to Radar.

Even though there were no behind-the-scenes negotiations going on at the moment, Abdul allegedly was holding out hope for a last-minute deal.

Despite the shocking news, as well as “finding out like everyone else,” Paula plans to take the high road.

“Paula likes Ellen and she doesn’t want to say a negative word about her and she won’t,” says the source.

Public reaction to Fox’s announcement Wednesday night that comedian/talk-show host/non-musician Ellen DeGeneres will become the permanent fourth judge on the hit singing show has been decidedly mixed.

Seems some people think having a shred of music experience is required for the job. Go figure.
