Sarah Palin doesn’t forgive easily.

The Alaska Governor and former Republican candidate for Vice President went on television Friday morning and scolded David Letterman for cracks he made about her daughter earlier in the week.

Palin’s husband, Todd, had already criticized the late night host, as had Palin herself on radio, but she appeared on the Today show, and told Matt Lauer that the joke Letterman made earlier in the week (about Bristol Palin getting “knocked up” by baseball star Alex Rodriguez during the family’s recent visit to Yankee Stadium), was more than a personal insult. She said that he owes an apology to “young women across the country.”

“He doesn’t have to apologize to me,” she said. “I would like to see him to apologize to young women across the country for contributing to that thread throughout our culture that makes it seem OK to talk about [statutory rape].”

Whether or not his joke was funny, Letterman’s tasteless oops was due to the fact it was Palin’s 14-year-old Willow who attended the baseball game, not her 18-year-old daughter Bristol. Letterman explained on air - “speaking about stupid human tricks, I stepped into traffic the other day” - that his remark was aimed at the elder of the two girls.

Governor Palin wasn’t satisfied, calling his joke “a degrading comment about a young woman” and saying that she hopes “people would start really rising up and not accepting this

“It’s no wonder girls have such low self-esteem in America when a comedian can make a remark like this,” she added.

Letterman continued to jest - and joust. He opened Thursday’s show by saying he was “making friends wherever I go.” He also said that “everything’s fine now” between him and the Palins and quipped the Governor had invited him to go hunting.
