Showtime’s “The L Word” is going out with a bang — literally, with the death of a major character kicking off its sixth and final season. Keep reading if you want to know more.
The lesbian-centric drama that helped pave the way for Showtime’s recent string of hits, including “Dexter,” “Weeds” and “Californication,” starts its final run at 9 p.m. ET/PT Sunday.
The big buzz that accompanied the show in its early years has waned a little, but a poignant and dramatic finale is in the works, and it starts with Mia Kirshner’s Jenny Schecter being offed in a flash-forward in the first 20 seconds of the season premiere. The tale will then move back to where last season ended and viewers will watch the pieces that led to the shocking death get put together as the season unfolds.
In a potentially related development — no one would say for sure — Showtime Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt confirmed that a pilot is in the works for a spinoff of “The L Word,” starring actress Leisha Hailey, who plays Alice Piescezki. It will be set in a prison and Greenblatt agreed it could be described as “a female ‘Oz,” but not as dark.
