Twitter Sensation SMDS Gets TV Deal
Twitter is no longer just a microblog - it’s now the breeding ground for a potential television series.
THR.com reports that a comedy project based on the popular Twitter feed “S**t My Dad Says“, or SMDS, created by Justin Halpern this past summer, has been picked up by CBS. Just last month, it was sold to Harper Collins for a book.
An unemployed Halpern began SMDS when he moved back in with his parents, and started Tweeting the often irreverent and outrageous comments made by his 73 year old father.
“Oh please, you practically invented lazy. People should have to call you and ask for the rights to lazy before they use it,” and “You sure do like to tailgate people … Right, because it’s real important you show up to the nothing you have to do on time” are just some of the gems to fall from the lips of Halpern’s dad.
The yet to be named show is being co-written by Halpern, and ‘Will & Grace‘ creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick are executive producers.
The Twitterverse had a lot to say following the news on Monday evening, While some were declaring TV has reached an all-new low with this move, others were happy to suggest show titles and casting ideas.
SMDS has gained over 700,000 followers on Twitter since its launch in August. CBS believes its online popularity and the upcoming book will attract viewers.
