Fancast Double Feature: As Selected By “Repo: The Genetic Opera” Director Darren Lynn Bousman

Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV and who has absolutely shattered all perceptions of his work with the stunning departure entitled Repo: The Genetic Opera, an indie goth rock horror opera about organ harvesting, has plenty to say about movies. Here are a couple of his off-kilter recommendations from Fancast’s library for your viewing pleasure, and he’ll tell you why you should watch these two twisted movies in his own words.

“The majority of the population will never know about the movie Bloody Mama. Why? It’s a great fucking exploitative film that no one knows about. That’s the great thing about the horror genre is that you can go back and discover those hidden gems. Here’s a movie that came out a little after Bonnie and Clyde, but it’s as violent if not more violent. You talk about the torture porn movies – the characters are raping and killing and murdering in an era of time where this shit wasn’t acceptable. That’s cool about the movie. On top of that, it’s one of Robert De Niro’s first roles, and he’s awesome in it. You can see a lot of directors pulling from it. So many directors have paid homage to this movie, and it’s just fun. Sexual innuendo to rape jokes to incest – if there’s any kind of sacred line, it was crossed in Bloody Mama.”

“It’s just awesome. You’ve got this schlub who works at a pretentious coffee shop where everyone is an artist except him. He’s struggling to fit in, and he’ll do anything it takes to be an artist, including killing. It’s about a series of bad events turns out for this guy after he kills to make his art. It’s one of those fun movies to sit back and watch.”
