Free Movie on Fancast: Drugstore Cowboy
Gus Van Sant has been all over the map as a director, balancing popular are like Good Will Hunting with questionable experiments like Gerry. But his interest in youth subcultures is as apparent now, with films like Paranoid Park, as it was back in 1989, when he made a film called Drugstore Cowboy.
It’s the story of Bob Hughes (Matt Dillon) and his wife Dianne (Kelly Lynch) who, along with the dim-witted Rick (James LeGros) and teenage Nadine (Heather Graham), spend their freewheeling wanderer days robbing pharmacies in order to feed their drug habits, while taking perverse delight in humiliating Gentry (James Remar), the cop on their trail. But when a tragedy hits the group, it causes Bob to rethink his life’s direction. Trouble is, it doesn’t do the same for his wife.
Drugstore Cowboy won a slew of indie film awards, and it’s a highly regarded piece of work from Van Sant, who can achieve great things when he’s on. Check it out, even if it’s only to see a young Heather Graham, or the appearance by author William Burroughs, who wrote Naked Lunch - the film adaptation of which you can also watch for free in its entirety on Fancast.
