In our ongoing celebration of the greatness of Paul Newman, we take note of his performance in Sam Mendes’ Road to Perdition, the 2002 crime drama starring Tom Hanks as hitman Michael Sullivan to Newman’s crime boss and father figure John Rooney. Sullivan lives the life, indebted to Rooney for giving him the opportunity for a life and a family, and Rooney loves Sullivan like a son. This, of course, annoys Rooney’s actual son Connor (Daniel Craig), so when Michael’s son witnesses his father on the job, Connor takes this chance to make his brutal, bloody move to put the two Sullivans on the run. Leaving Rooney to lament the loss of his own family.

Dramatic and beautifully shot, it’s the only time you’re going to get Paul Newman in a movie based on a comic book. So check out Road to Perdition when you get a chance.
