Billy Wilder is a much beloved director, who could span the gamut of genres from dark noir like Double Indemnity to frothy comedy such as Some Like It Hot. So when he takes on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous character of Sherlock Holmes, the world’s greatest detective, it certainly bears investigation.

In The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, the titular master of deduction is played by British stage legend Robert Stephens, and the tale is told as an excerpt from the diary of Holmes’ erstwhile partner, Dr. Watson (Colin Blakely). Not only does it follow the investigator through his inquiry into the disapperance of a mining engineer that could have a significant effect on England’s national security, but it also chronicles the events that occur when the notoriously aloof sleuth falls in love for the first time in his life, with a mysterious woman named Gabrielle Valladon (Genevieve Page).
