Arlis Sweeney (Dennis Quaid) is a low-key Texas vending machine supplier who has been going through the motions of his life for years, haunted by the ghost of his father (James Caan) - a bastard of a man whom Arlis witnessed killing an entire family, leaving the young man to believe he was destined to be just as detestable a human being as his father was. That is, until a lonesome hitchhiker by the name of Kay Davies (Meg Ryan) finds her way into his life, and starts to help him sort through the wreckage of his past…. until Arlis finally figures out where he’s seen her before.

Gwyneth Paltrow also makes an appearance in writer/director Steve Kloves’ Flesh and Bone in a ‘before they were stars’ moment, playing a hardened thief who robs from the dead.
