Watch a Movie on Fancast: Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd in “De-Lovely,” The Life of Cole Porter

It’s delightful, it’s delicious, it’s de-lovely!
So goes the Cole Porter line from his musical Anything Goes, and the title song to that play is the number that opens up Irwin Winkler’s De-Lovely, a retelling of the master music man’s life. It takes the form of an aged Porter’s (Kevin Kline) memories being staged by a man named Gabe (Jonathan Pryce) as a musical of its own, centering around the unique relationship he had with Linda Lee Thomas (Ashley Judd). The two were married for 34 years even though she was well aware of the fact that he was likely more gay than he was bisexual.
Both Kline and Judd were nominated for Golden Globe awards for their roles here, and even though Kline has won multiple Tony Awards, he intentionally limited his vocal range to accurately portray Porter, who couldn’t much sing himself. Yet the performances of Porter tunes by stars like Elvis Costello, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Diana Krall, Robbie Williams and Natalie Cole more than make up for that limitation.
