In her last film before a 15-year retirement from acting, Jane Fonda stars as Iris King, a recently-widowed working mother living in a bad neighborhood with her two children (Martha Plimpton and Harley Cross) and her unemployed sister (Swoosie Kurtz) and her lout of a husband (Jamey Sheridan). She works at a large commercial bakery, and in that bakery’s cafeteria is Stanley Cox (Robert De Niro), who is not in the best of shape himself - living with his father, no driver’s license and a secret inability to read that eventually gets him fired. But after saving Iris from a street thug one night, a relationship between the two begins to blossom, and it grows ever-stronger when he finally gets the courage to ask her for help to cure his illiteracy.
