Watch a Paul Newman Movie on Fancast: “Buffalo Bill and the Indians”
Paul Newman was one of the greatest guys ever. In the history of time. This much is truth, and it is undisputable.
Fancast is lucky to have the opportunity to present his work with renowned director Robert Altman on Buffalo Bill and the Indians or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson, playing the titular celebrity Buffalo Bill Cody in this complete skewering of the heroic mythos of the Old West and the entertainment industry in general. Cody is a man who has completely accepted the lies and inflations surrounding his deeds, and in fact he revels in them, scarcely able to separate fact from fiction anymore. He even has a “Wild West Show” that he uses to cash in on his name and legend. That is, until he hires Sitting Bull (Frank Kaquitts) to get in on the act, and the chief refuses to participate in any of the historically slanted acts, insisting on authenticity.
Cody tries to rid himself of Sitting Bull, but when Annie Oakley (Geraldine Chaplin) takes his side, Buffalo Bill’s own sense of self begins to unravel, and there’s nobody you’d rather have playing this meltdown than Paul Newman.
It wasn’t received well at the time, as it was supposed to be something gloriously American to celebrate the bicentennial in 1976. But Altman has never been one to give audiences their easy cinematic candy. With his usual ensemble cast, including Shelley Duvall, Burt Lancaster, John Considine, Harvey Keitel, Kevin McCarthy, Joel Grey, Denver Pyle and Will Sampson, Altman takes apart the American Dream of the Old West and doesn’t put it back together again.
Paul Newman was the real American Dream. A great guy whose remarkable talent allowed him to become rich and famous and yet he remained one of the greatest guys you could ever meet. One of the greatest guys you could ever be.
