"I'm something of a history buff. It's deliberate that a lot of my films have been period pieces." - Elwes to People magazine, Feb. 6, 1995
"When I work, I live in a fantasy world. It's great. I get to play different characters who inspire me." - Elwes, quoted in Time Out New York, May 8-15, 1999
According to genealogy research, Elwes is a descendant of Mary Dudley. He portryed Mary's brother Guilford Dudley in one of his first major film roles, "Lady Jane"
At one time, his family's surname was Cary-Elwes but over the years, his branch dropped the prefix, although his parents used 'Cary' as a middle name for their children.
On playing villains, Elwes with tongue-in-cheek told USA Today (Dec. 29, 1994): "You get all the best lines."
