"He always kept the staff entertained, and if he can make a bunch of bitter, self-hating comedy writers laugh, then I'm sure he'll have no trouble making the rest of America laugh." - Matt Groening on Conan O'Brien's abilities to host "Late Night," from New York Newsday, April 28, 1993
"I won an Emmy as a comedy writer on Saturday Night Live in 1989, so I have one of them, and that takes all the mystique away. It turns out that they're made of balsa wood and then spray-painted. And you can tell they recycle them. Mine says 'Conan O'Brien,' but when you hold it up to the light you can see lettering underneath that says 'Robert Guillaume' for Benson." - O'Brien on winning an Emmy to People magazine, Sept. 30, 2002
"I worry about that day when I've got my repertoire of silly things I've discovered over the years and that's it, I'm done," he says. "The minute you think your done, that's when the rot sets in. And that goes for any comedian." - O'Brien to Emmy magazine, issue No.2, 2005
On Oct. 11, 2005, O'Brien first pointed out on his show that he resembles the President of Finland, Tarja Halonen (who is female). Since then he has done many comedy bits about that fact, including one that promoted Halonen for a second term.
After the initial publicity received by O'Brien's sketch, Tarja Halonen's re-election campaign started advertising on the Finnish broadcast of Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Halonen was re-elected as the Finnish President on Jan. 29th 2006. O'Brien is extremely popular in Finland, where his show airs in primetime. O'Brien visited Finland from Feb. 11-14, while NBC aired the 2006 Winter Olympics.
On Sept. 25, 2009, O'Brien suffered a mild concussion during a "Tonight Show" sketch with actress Teri Hatcher, in which the host fell backwards onto his head while running a mock race. He was taken immediately to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after he seemed confused and disoriented. He was examined and released the same day and would return to work the following Monday to make fun of the incident.
