Notes on Ricki Lake

"I needed someone who was big and pretty and could act and dance. Ricki had a great laugh and basically said 'I am Tracy, I can be that, I've always been that type of girl. I've always been big, I'm not uptight about it and I've always been a leader.' I'm very happy with her." - John Waters in press release for "Hairspray" (1988)

In early 2007, Lake pursued an intense "new routine" resulting in over 125 pounds of weight loss, taking her to 120 pounds, down from a high of 260 pounds. In November 2007 Lake statted that chid sexual abuse was to blame for her weight gain.

In November 1994, Lake was arrested with her husband and a dozen others for participation in anti-fur protest at designer Karl Lagerfeld's offices; accepted plea bargain that included $45 fine and four days of community service delivering meals to people with AIDS.
