In May 2001, O'Neal disclosed that he was diagnosed with leukemia on his 60th birthday (April 20).

On Feb. 3, 2007, O'Neal was arrested for allegedly assaulting his son, Griffin, in Malibu, California. The elder O'Neal, 65, was arrested and accused of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm. He was released on a $50,000 bond. O'Neal's manager, Neil Hassman, claimed the actor was defending himself after his son began "wildly swinging a fireplace poker." Griffin O'Neal's pregnant girlfriend was slightly injured in the incident. Prosecutors decided against filing charges against Ryan O'Neal.

On Jan. 9, 2009, O'Neal pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge - for his arrest in September 2008 - and was ordered into an 18-month drug diversion program.

On Sept. 17, 2008, O'Neal and son Redmond O'Neal were arrested on suspicion of narcotics possession after a probation search at the actor's Malibu home. Deputies found Redmond O'Neal, 24, in possession of methamphetamine while a vial of the drug was found in Ryan O'Neal's bedroom.
