An angry man approaches Richard Alpert wanting to know why he brought a young boy into the Temple. The man then talks to Young Ben, telling him he is now one of them. The man's name is Charles Widmore. In the present, Ben is woken up in the infirmary by Locke, who is very much alive. Shaken, Ben explains to Locke that he must be judged by the smoke monster for breaking the rules. Flash to the night when Ben stole baby Alex from Rousseau. He sneaks into her tent and tells her if she wants her baby to live, she should not try to find her. Back in the present, Ben tells Caesar he should not trust John Locke. Caesar shows Ben his shotgun, tells him not to worry, and walks off. Ben tries to explain to Locke why he killed him. Locke does not want an explanation, just an apology. The two plan to take a boat to the main island so Ben can find the smoke monster, but they are stopped by Caesar. When Caesar refuses to let them take the boat, Ben shoots him with the shotgun he secretly stole from him. Ben and Locke take the boat. Locke tells Ben that he thinks Ben wants to be judged for Alex's death. Flash to Ben and Young Ethan taking baby Alex back to their camp. Widmore wants Ben to kill the baby, but he refuses, claiming he does not believe that is what Jacob wants. Back in the present, Locke and Ben arrive at the barracks, where a light is on in Ben's old house. He goes to see who is there, and finds Sun and Lapidus, who were told to wait there by Christian. He said Locke would help Sun find Jin. They have found a picture of DHARMA in 1977, and their friends are in the picture. A confused Lapidus leaves to try and fix his plane. Ben opens a secret door, goes through a tunnel, drains a puddle of water, and yells that he will be waiting outside. Flash to Ben pushing a young Alex on a swing. Richard tells him the submarine is leaving, so Ben goes to watch Widmore be banished from the Island. He has left the Island too often and even had a child with an "outsider." Widmore assures Ben that killing Alex was what the Island wanted, and that it will eventually happen, leading to Ben’s own banishment. Back in the present, Locke leads Ben and Sun to the Temple wall. Ben tells them the actual Temple is another half-mile inside the wall. Locke tells Ben he is to go under the wall. Before heading down, Ben tells Sun to apologize to Desmond for him if she ever sees him. Flash to the day of the Ajira flight. Ben calls Widmore to tell him he is going to kill Penny. He goes to her boat but is stopped by Desmond. Ben shoots at him and is about to shoot Penny, but pauses when he sees their son, Charlie. Desmond miraculously arrives just in time to beat Ben up. Back in the present, Lapidus returns to the beach where he is met by Ilana and others pointing their guns at him. Ilana asks him, "What lies in the shadow of the statue?" Lapidus has no idea, so she knocks him out. In the cave below the Temple, Ben falls through the floor into a room covered in hieroglyphics. the black smoke rises through the wall and surrounds him, showing him images of his past, and scenes from Alex's death. He cries and the smoke disappears. Suddenly, Alex is there. He apologizes to her. She pushes him against a pillar and tells him he needs to follow every word John Locke says or she will destroy him. He agrees to follow Locke and is happy to be alive.
