Daniel Faraday gets off the submarine and tells Miles he is there because he wants to know how Jack, Kate, and Hurley made it back to the Island. He wakes up Jack and asks. Jack says Faraday's mother, Eloise Hawking, helped them. Faraday tells Jack he was not supposed to come back. Flash to Faraday as a young boy playing the piano. His mother tells him he must stop playing and only focus on his studies since he has a talent and a special destiny. Back on the Island, Miles takes Faraday to the Orchid, where Faraday tries to convince Chang to evacuate the Island by explaining that he is from the future and knows an electromagnetic accident is about to happen at the Swan Station in six hours. Chang does not believe him, especially when he insists that Miles is Chang's son. Flash to Faraday graduating as the youngest doctor in Oxford's history. He wants to introduce his girlfriend/lab assistant Theresa to his mother but Eloise is not interested. She takes him to lunch alone, where he tells her he received a grant from Charles Widmore. She persuades him to continue working hard and gives him a blank journal as a gift. Back on the Island, Sawyer has a meeting with Jack, Hurley, Kate, Jin, and Juliet explaining why Phil is locked up in his closet. They are about to vote on what to do when Faraday bursts in and asks where he can find the Hostiles. He explains that Ellie, one of the Hostiles the met in their time travels, is his mother and that she is the only person who can get them back to their proper time. Flash to an adult Faraday sobbing over the news report of the Oceanic 815 wreckage in the water. Unfortunately, he has had some memory loss and does not know why this footage is making him sad. He is visited by Charles Widmore, who he recognizes as his benefactor. Faraday apologizes for what happened to his lab assistant Theresa, assuring Widmore that he tried the tests on himself first. He tells Widmore of his sadness over the Oceanic wreckage. Widmore tells him that he planted a fake plane there to protect an island, and he wants Faraday to go to this island so he can be healed of his memory loss. Back on the Island, Jack and Kate are getting a car for Faraday when Faraday sees young Charlotte playing on the swings. Faraday tells her to leave the Island and never come back. Radzinsky shows up with his men while Jack, Kate, and Faraday are getting guns. A gun fight begins and they narrowly escape. Radzinsky sounds the alarm and runs to find Sawyer. At Sawyer's house, Radzinsky finds Phil locked in the closet, so he points his guns at Sawyer and Juliet. Flash to an adult Faraday being visited by Eloise who strongly urges him to go on Widmore's mission. He agrees to go if it will make his mother proud. Back on the Island in 1977, Jack, Kate and Faraday are in the woods looking for the Hostiles. On their way, Faraday explains his mission: The Swan Station is about to release a dangerously large amount of energy. DHARMA will fill it with cement and create the Hatch and the button that must be pushed to control it. These events lead to the crash of Oceanic 815 and everything that happened after that. He wants to try and change what is about to happen by using himself as a variable, and by using the hydrogen bomb. Flash to after Desmond has been shot by Ben. Penny rushes him to the hospital, where she is greeted in the waiting room by Eloise. Eloise says she is scared because for the first time in a long time, she does not actually know what is about to happen. The doctors tell Penny Desmond will be fine. Outside of the hospital, Widmore approaches Eloise. He says he has had to sacrifice his relationship with his daughter for their cause. She is angry that she had to make Faraday, her son, go back to the Island when she knew what would happen when he did. Widmore says that Faraday is his son too. She slaps him in the face. Back on the Island in 1977, Faraday storms into the Hostiles' camp with his gun, demanding to speak with Ellie and to get to the hydrogen bomb. Richard Alpert tries to get him to drop the gun but he won't. Suddenly, Faraday is shot from behind. He falls to the ground. He was shot by Ellie. Faraday is shocked that his mother knew all along what would happen and still told him to go to the Island. Faraday tells Ellie he is her son, and dies.
