The Devil's Arithmetic (1999)

A pampered Jewish teenage girl, Hannah, is transported back in time to her family's tragic past during the Holocaust in German-occupied Poland in 1941. There, alongside her future aunt, she begins her surrealistic journey of discovery. Imprisoned in a concentration camp and forced to work at hard labor, with little food and insufficient clothing, Hannah struggles to endure the deplorable environment and the agony of seeing women and children sent to the crematoriums. Hannah forms a friendship with Rivkah and renders comfort to the children by telling them bedtime stories. When Rivkah becomes ill and unfit for work, Hannah, knowing that Rivkah will be put to death, stands in her place. She comes to understand that Rivkah is in truth her beloved Aunt Eva, and that she will know her again in a different time and place. Suddenly, Hannah reawakens at Aunt Eva's apartment with a newfound awareness of her family's religious and cultural traditions.
